1. According to là gì?
Cụm từ according to có nghĩa là theo như, căn cứ vào cái gì đó hay theo như lời của ai đó
Ví dụ: Students are all put in different groups according to their ability (Học sinh được xếp vào các nhóm khác nhau tùy theo năng lực của mình)
Lưu ý: Chúng ta không dùng according to để bày tỏ quan điểm của bản thân
Khi muốn bày tỏ ý kiến hay quan điểm của bản thân thì ta dùng cấu trúc in my opinion/ from my point of view hay as i said với nghĩa là “theo quan điểm của tôi” để diễn đạt
Trong khi diễn đạt, chúng ta cần tránh cách diễn đạt according to me sẽ mất đi sự tự nhiên
Ví dụ: In my opinion, this whole theater of operations is a sideshow (Theo tôi, toàn bộ hoạt động của nhà hát này là một màn trình diễn)
2. Phân biệt according to và in my opinion
2.1 According to
According to là một cụm giới từ dùng để diễn đạt một ý kiến không phải là ý kiến, quan điểm của người nói
Cấu trúc according to thường xuất hiện ở đầu câu và theo sau nó là một mệnh đề hay một cụm danh từ
Ví dụ: According to my mother, you have to eat three meals a day every day (Theo lời mẹ, ngày nào bạn cũng phải ăn đủ 3 bữa)
2.2 In my opinion
In my opinion là một cụm giới từ dùng để diễn đạt ý kiến của bản thân người nói
Nghĩa: cấu trúc in my opinion có nghĩa là “theo quan điểm của tôi”
Ví dụ: In my opinion, this is the only chance your husband has (Theo ý kiến của tôi, đây là cơ hội duy nhất mà chồng bạn có được)
3. Cấu trúc according to và cách dùng
Cấu trúc according to được dùng khá nhiều trong cả giao tiếp lẫn viết
Nghĩa: Thường dùng bày tỏ quan điểm của người nào đó, theo cái gì đó
Chúng ta có thêt dùng according to để nói đến nguồn thông tin hay ý tưởng nào đó
Cấu trúc: According to noun, S V (O) … (Theo như cái gì đó, theo như ai)
Danh từ theo sau according to có thể là một đại từ hay một dnah từ (her, his, john, the rules,..)
Ví dụ: According to Sarah they’re not getting on very well at the moment (Theo như Sarah, hiện tại họ không ổn lắm)

According to the plan: Theo như kế hoạch
According to the law, rules: Theo như luật pháp, quy định
According to one’s own lights: Làm việc gì theo quan điểm của mình dù biết quan điểm của ai đó là như thế nào
Cut your coat according to your cloth: Thành ngữ mang nghĩa ta nên đảm nhận công việc nào đó theo khả năng của bản thân, “Liệu cơm gắp mắm”
Ví dụ:
- According to plan, we will build that house in June (Theo như kế hoach, chúng ta sẽ xây ngôi nhà đó vào tháng 6)
- According to the law, you are not allowed to run a red light in traffic (Theo như luật pháp, bạn không được phép vượt đèn đỏ khi tham gia giao thông)
- Of course, we’d love a luxurious car, but you have to cut your coat according to your cloth (Tất nhiên là chúng tôi thích một chiếc xe ô tô sang trọng, nhưng bạn cần lựa khả năng tài chính của mình)
